Christmas came early for us in 2021 when we were asked to help on a quick turnaround project for our friends at Taxi and their client ‘Tim Hortons’.
Sometimes it’s the small projects that give you that warm fuzzy feeling when you’re creating them, and this was one of our favourites from last year. This small social media campaign enabled us to bring together 3 of our favourite mediums (which doesn’t often happen) where we got to play with 2D animation applied into a 3D modelled, animated and rendered scene which we then too into Augmented Reality all wrap up as one Digital Social Media Tool Kit.
'Digital Tool Kit' List of deliverables
6 x Hi res digital CG rendered images
6 x 2D animated vector animations
7 x 10” CG animated video various formats and proportions (English Language)
7 x 10” CG animated video various formats and proportions (French Language)
1 x Custom made Christmas audio track
2 x Spark AR Facebook / Instagram filter
What We Did
We created a very simple social media campaign featuring ‘Tim Hortons’ new Christmas packaging design that they were using for 2021, featuring cute Christmas graphics which were designed to be printed on their takeaway cups, delivery bags and doughnut boxes.
We were given pretty much free rein to get creative, so we came up with a simple animated story/scenario where each of the characters subtly and playfully interacted with each other across the surfaces of the 3D objects which were lined up in camera.
We created simple 2D animated graphics which could be used as stand-alone animated website banner or additionally applied as an animated texture map which we added into our animated 3d scene onto the textured surfaces of the objects.
We then rendered out 3d camera moves whilst the 2D animated graphics played on the surfaces of the objects.
We brought this all together with a custom-made Christmas themed backing track which completed the 10” animation which the client used across all social media platforms.
We really loved the concept of these cute 2d animated characters so we decided to see what else we could do with them and there was only one other option and that was to somehow get the campaign into Social AR.
So, we developed a simple social media AR deployment utilising Facebook/Instagram’s Spark Studio, creating a ‘Snapchat’ type filter which allowed the user to transpose some of the animated 2D Christmas characters on their own faces with some fun interactions they could activate via their phone.
I hope you enjoyed what we created and we hope that it gives you some inspiration for how you can use a similar approach for your own product or service.
